Fraud and corruption: Two municipality officials appear in Bethlehem court

Two municipality officials have appeared at the Bethlehem Regional Court on 20 May 2019, separately for alleged fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

The Hawks’ National Clean Audit Task Team arrested a 47 year old acting manager of the Maluti a Phofung Municipality, Mbongiseni Solomon Nyembe for alleged contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) for the period 2014 – 2015.

Nyembe was granted R10 000 bail, and the case has been postponed to the 13th of June 2019 pending further investigation.

Meanwhile Seiphatji Mavis Mabula (46), a Director for Corporate Services within Dihlabeng Municipality also appeared at the same court facing allegations of defeating the ends of justice.

It is alleged that Mabula has continuously interfered with ongoing investigations regarding alleged fraud, corruption and irregular awarding of tenders by the Dihlabeng Municipality. Mabula was released on a warning, and is expected back at court on the 13th of June 2019.
