HEIDEDAL — A recent Heidedal anti-gang operation has resulted in the arrest of four suspects and the seizure of Crystal Meth after police were forced to deploy crowd-control weapons against a hostile mob.
The Provincial Anti-Gang Unit executed a search warrant at a residential property in Joe Slovo on Tuesday at approximately 06:45. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the tactical team faced immediate resistance when the 45-year-old homeowner released his pit bulls at two officers. The police officials successfully utilized their tactical training to evade potentially fatal bites from the animals.
After securing the property, authorities confiscated a large quantity of Crystal Meth along with an undisclosed sum of cash suspected to be the proceeds of illegal activities.
The situation outside the residence deteriorated rapidly once the homeowner was informed of his arrest. An unruly crowd gathered and began throwing stones at the police, inflicting heavy damage on state vehicles. When a backup unit from the Heidedal SAPS arrived on the scene, their response vehicle was also targeted and severely damaged by the aggressive mob.
To ensure the safety of the officers, protect state property, and maintain public order, the Anti-Gang Unit deployed rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the crowd. The police successfully secured the crime scene, preserved the drug evidence, and extracted the team along with the four detainees.
The arrests are divided into two categories based on the incidents:
Inside the residence: The 45-year-old homeowner and a 20-year-old man were arrested on charges of dealing in drugs. The homeowner is additionally facing a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) for weaponizing his dogs against the officers.
Outside the residence: Two men, aged 26 and 51, were arrested in connection with the mob violence. They face charges of malicious damage to property and assault with intent to cause GBH regarding the attacks on the police and their vehicles.
All four individuals are scheduled to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court in the near future.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia issued a strong condemnation of the violence directed at law enforcement and state assets.
“An attack on the police is a direct attack on the authority of the State. Our officers put their lives on the line daily to rid our neighbourhoods of dangerous drugs and violent gangs,” Lesia stated.
He highlighted the troubling nature of residents turning against law enforcement, noting, “It is deeply concerning and entirely unacceptable when community elements choose to shield criminal syndicates by turning heavily on the very police officials working to protect their children and families from the scourge of drug addiction.”
Reaffirming the police service’s commitment to the region, Lesia emphasized that the SAPS will not be intimidated by the violence. “And we will not retreat. SAPS will continue to execute its mandate without fear or favour,” he concluded.
