The late ward councillor candidate, Mr Piet Moletsane (31) was about to close a liquor business premises when he was fatally wounded. He was certified dead at the scene on 23 September 2021 in Meloding.

A case of murder was registered and assigned to two Detective Sergeants, Kabelo Molebatsi and Thabang Mokone from Free State Organized Crime Unit.

A thorough investigation was conducted and leads were followed up which led to two arrests. The suspects appeared several times in the Virginia Magistrate Court and their case was postponed to 13 May 2022.

The third suspect who is a former Councillor of Matjhabeng Municipality was arrested recently and appeared on 4 May 2022 in the Virginia Magistrate Court.

The case of murder against Mr Sephiri Jan Liphoko (44) has been postponed to 13 May 2022 for bail application.

He remains in custody.
