
Police have arrested a 37-year-old foreign national after drugs with an estimated street value of R20,000 were found in his vehicle during Operation Basadi in Welkom.
According to authorities, Lieutenant Colonel Sello and her team received a tip-off on Friday, 8 August 2025, about an African male allegedly selling drugs from his car. Acting on the information, officers located the suspect’s vehicle parked in the Welkom Central Business District (CBD).
The Welkom K9 Unit was called in, and despite resistance from the suspect, a search was conducted. Police discovered a black plastic bag containing narcotics hidden inside the car.
The confiscated drugs included:

46 grams of crystal meth

34 rocks of cocaine

19 Mandrax tablets
In addition to the drugs, officers seized R1,500 in cash and a white Volkswagen Polo.
The 37-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of illegal substances and is expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.
