The acting Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, Major General Solly Lesia has instructed the activation of the 72 hours activation plan following the murder of five family members in Marakong village, Namahadi, Qwaqwa.

On 4 April 2021 at about 03:30, the police received a report of people who had burnt inside a house.

On arrival at Marakong, the police found a body of a female with a gunshot wound to the stomach lying on the ground. Then inside the burnt mud house, a body of a male person was found burnt to death. The two were described as a couple in their early thirties.

At another house, bodies of a mother, her daughter and son were found burnt inside a shack. The 11-year-old grandson was allegedly hit by assailants with a knobkierie on the nose.

He is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

The motive for the killing is currently unknown and a case of murder, arson and attempted murder has been registered for further investigation.

“We request the public to assist us with information that may lead to the identification and/or arrest of the perpetrators.
