FICKSBURG — A violent Ficksburg supermarket shootout has left two law enforcement officers and a store worker hospitalized after police interrupted an armed business robbery. The tense evening confrontation resulted in the death of one unidentified suspect, while the remaining assailants managed to escape into the night.
The chaotic incident unfolded at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Monday when local authorities rushed to a popular chain grocery store following reports of an active heist. Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered terrified shoppers fleeing the premises in a panic. As law enforcement advanced, the alleged robbers initiated a gun battle, forcing the responding units to defend themselves and return fire.
Following the intense exchange, authorities discovered an unidentified male suspect deceased on the sidewalk. Investigators recovered a 9mm firearm with a defaced serial number alongside live ammunition near the body. Meanwhile, the other perpetrators utilized the cover of darkness to flee the scene on foot.
The crossfire resulted in significant injuries: one officer sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso, a second officer was struck in the right leg, and a supermarket staff member suffered a bullet injury to the arm. All three survivors were promptly transported to separate medical facilities where they are currently receiving treatment.
Detectives are currently working to determine the exact number of individuals involved in the heist and whether any money was successfully taken. While no arrests have been made regarding the fleeing suspects, authorities have officially registered dockets for business robbery and three counts of attempted murder. Furthermore, standard procedure dictates that the circumstances surrounding the deceased suspect’s death be referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) through an inquest docket.
Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, publicly praised the responding officers for their bravery and rapid intervention. He highlighted their courage in neutralizing a severe threat to protect local shoppers while navigating a life-threatening firefight. Lieutenant General Lesia also expressed his wishes for the swift recovery of the wounded personnel and the civilian worker, confirming that the affected officers will receive professional counseling and care via the Employee Health and Wellness Programme.
