FF Plus - 'Farm murders in South Africa are out of control'

The FF Plus condemns the brutal and senseless farm attack outside Kestell in the Free State in which seven people were killed.

What is especially shocking is that six of the victims were women. Five of them were employees on the farm.

The owner of the farm, Mr Alheit Smit (77), discovered the bodies of his wife, Sisi, his seventeen-year-old stepson and the five female employees.

The FF Plus commends the swift response by the police and the arrest of two suspects near the Bohlokong settlement just outside Bethlehem. Two stolen firearms, among other things, were recovered.

Violence and murder, especially farm murders, in South Africa are out of control and the FF Plus wants to see the most severe penalties imposed on the perpetrators.

It is time to draw the line with regard to rural safety and farm attacks. It seems, however, that the FF Plus’s pleas have been falling on deaf ears all these years.

Incidents such as these point to the serious shortcomings in the country’s criminal justice system, and the fact that criminals do not fear the police.

The FF Plus will continue to put pressure on the government to declare farm attacks a priority crime.

Ultimately, law-abiding citizens’ safety will only be prioritised once the current ruling party has been replaced. The people of South Africa deserve better than the ANC.
