A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his 8-year-old daughter in a case that has shocked the community. The Ladybrand Regional Court found the biological father guilty on 29 June 2025, and on 10 July 2025, handed down the maximum sentence for his horrific crime.
Details of the Case
The incident occurred on 6 June 2020, while the victim was visiting her father, who was staying at his late mother’s home. Although the accused and the child’s mother were divorced, they shared joint custody of the girl. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools were on holiday, and the mother picked up her daughter the same day.
Upon noticing that her daughter was walking abnormally, the mother questioned her, leading the child to disclose that her father had sexually abused her. Distraught, the mother called neighbours, who also observed physical signs of assault. She immediately took her daughter to the police station to open a case and then to a local hospital, where a medical examination confirmed the rape.
Arrest and Trial
Detective Sergeant Olebile arrested the father, who was denied bail and remained in custody until trial. After a lengthy legal process, the Ladybrand Regional Court convicted him on 29 June 2025.
Sentencing and Consequences
On 10 July 2025, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment and declared him unfit to possess a firearm. Additionally, his name will be added to:
-
The National Register for Sex Offenders, barring him from working with children.
-
Part B of the National Child Protection Register, which lists perpetrators of crimes against children.
