On 3 June 2018, at 03:00 there was a farm attack In the Reitz area, Free State. The van Niekerk couple, Kobus and Marlise were surprised in their bed by a group of between five and seven armed attackers who were already in the house. The couple were assaulted and tied up. The attackers gained access to the house through a sliding door.
They were forced to open the safe and three firearms were stolen. The couple have been admitted to a hospital in Bethlehem after they managed to raise an alarm. The families land cruiser was also taken and later recovered abandoned near Warden.
The attackers fled the scene and no arrests have been made.
