The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the grim discovery of a young man’s body on a farm in the Free State, leading to the arrest of an 80-year-old suspect.
The investigation was launched following a tip-off from members of the community. According to a police statement, a dedicated task team from Bloemfontein pursued several leads which directed them to a farm situated along the road between Kroonstad and Welkom.
On Wednesday, 20 August 2025, police officers recovered human remains from the location. It is alleged that the deceased had been buried on the property.
Due to the advanced state of decomposition of the body, authorities have collected DNA samples for analysis. This scientific process is necessary to formally confirm the identity of the deceased.
A case docket has been opened, and the elderly suspect now faces charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice. He is currently in police custody and is expected to make his initial court appearance in the near future. The SAPS has indicated that there is a possibility of additional arrests as the investigation progresses.
