Double standards: Ramaphosa and Cele must accept responsibility for Senekal

Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa and Bheki Cele, Minister of Police, must accept responsibility for events in Senekal on 6 October 2020, during the first appearance of the men accused of the murder of Brendin Horner (21). Government’s continuous denial of farm murders and its refusal to declare these priority crimes are the reason that emotions exploded in this Free State town.

Ramaphosa earlier denied the existence of farm murders on an international platform, while Cele provoked farmers and humiliated them at a meeting in KwaZulu-Natal last month to discuss their problems.

Government is completely out of touch with the fight and pleas of the rural communities and farmers.

Their condemnation of the actions of the people in Senekal speaks of government’s double standards. Cele and other ministers now demand that these people be arrested, while the same ministers simply looked on while EFF supporters looted and torched Clicks outlets.

Ernst Roets, head of Policy and Action at AfriForum, says that people are continuously confronted with the reality of farm murders, having to comfort their loved while government have no regard for their grief.
