A 38-year-old burglar will serve a jail term after being positively linked with DNA to a burglary that took place in 2017.

On Monday afternoon, 2 January 2017, Motlalepule Mofokeng (38) broke into a house at Brick Street, Universitas, in Bloemfontein and stole some items, including a laptop and jewellery.

A case was registered and followed up by an investigating officer, who took crucial evidence for testing. On Monday 31 May 2021, the DNA results came back and positively linked the accused to the burglary.

He was then officially charged with housebreaking and theft and attended trial until the Bloemfomtein Magistrate’s Court found him guilty on Wednesday, 7 January 2024.

The diligent work of Detective Sergeant Jacob Kotwane of the Mangaung DNA Task Team, led to Mofokeng being sentenced to ten years of direct imprisonment.
