Departments debt to Mangaung municipality a shame

The Free State government owes the Mangaung Metro Municipality nearly R466 million, R330 of which is owed by the Department of Public Works.

The Metro that was identified by the Auditor-General (AG) as the worst metro in the country as regards to financial management, is threatening to cut off the electricity supply to governmental buildings due to the outstanding debt.

Free State municipalities currently find themselves in a financial crisis due to mismanagement, cadre deployment and the ANC’s inability to rule. This culture of ineptitude was established by the leaders of the ruling party.

It is an utter shame that governmental departments, like the Department of Public Works, are not paying their municipal accounts. The government cannot expect taxpayers to pay their utility accounts on time every month if the government itself cannot even set the right example.

Under the leadership of MEC Dora Kotzee, the Department has become dysfunctional and it can seemingly not even execute basic financial management.

The FF Plus takes note of the debt collection measures implemented by the Metro and welcomes it but deems it a shame that it is necessary for a municipality to implement such measures against a provincial department.

The ANC government is like a fish that rots from the head down.

Its poor leadership is busy catching up on the ruling party. The time has come for taxpayers to demand an alternative government, one that is not dominated by a single political party.
