A 41-year-old traffic officer was arrested on Thursday, 26 March 2020 for corruption in a crackdown operation by members of the Serious Corruption Investigation in conjunction with the SAPS Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit and Crime Intelligence.

The arrest follows an undercover operation after it emerged that the traffic officer allegedly demanded money from a truck driver in order not to issue him with a fine for not complying with transport load permit.

The matter was reported to the Hawks and it as alleged the traffic official contacted the investigating officer and handed over the Hawks member R10 000 to drop the case against him. He was arrested on the spot and he is expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on 27 March 2020.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 25 March 2020 the Serious Commercial Crime Investigating in Bethlehem acted on information of a traffic official who claimed that he can arrange a fraudulent motorbike license for his son for a fee. During a controlled a police operation, the complainant met with the traffic official in Bethlehem and presented the suspect with R4000.

The suspect aged 54 was arrested.

It was discovered that the suspect was a bogus traffic official and wants to scam the complainant. He is expected to appear before the Bethlehem Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 30 March 2020.
