The community members of Namibia Square in Mangaung assisted in apprehending a 35-year-old suspect for alleged rape on Tuesday, 22 February 2022.

This is after the 21-year-old victim recognised the suspect walking in the street and raised alarm so that the community can help. The community members came out in numbers, chased and apprehended the suspect.

The suspect was then handed over to the police.

On Sunday, 20 March 2022, the 21-year-old woman was walking from a tavern with a male friend when they were attacked by the suspect. The suspect got hold of the victim, threatened her with a knife and robbed her of a cellphone.

She was further accosted by the suspect who pushed her to the ground and raped her. A case of rape with an additional charge of robbery with a knife was opened at Kopanong Police Station.

The suspect will appear in Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 24 March 2022.
