Cash-in-transit suspect convicted of double murder and armed robbery

Monyane Ishmael Mohlomi (32) was found guilty of double murder, armed robbery with aggravating circumstances, double attempted murder as well as illegal possession of firearms and ammunition when he appeared at the Bloemfontein High Court on Monday 20 July 2020 for sentencing.

Mohlomi and an accomplice were arrested on 7 August 2017, following a failed cash-in-transit heist at Central Park Building in Bloemfontein. Two of their accomplices were fatally wounded, one died on the scene whilst the other at the local hospital.

The four suspects reportedly accosted the security officers, pointed them with a firearms, demanding that they hand over the cash while they were walking towards Absa Bank ATM’s to load money. Shots were fired towards the security officers and they retaliated and a shooting ensued.

Three unlicensed firearms and a number of cartridges were confiscated from the crime scene for further investigation. Both suspects opted to abandon their bail applications and they remained incinerated pending the court appearance. The second accused was acquitted on all charges.

Mohlomi will appear again in the Bloemfontein High Court on 27 July 2020 for arrangement of date for heads of arguments for aggravating and mitigating factors.
