Business robbery: 8 SAPS - 'Tactical Response Team' members remanded in custody

Eight Tactical Response Team (TRT) members appeared in the Kroonstad Magistrate court on 25 September 2020, on charges of business robbery, defeating the ends of justice and perjury. The members, Sergeants Doctor Christian Maloisane, Tieho William Nkebenyane, Paseka Kelebohile Molifi, Sello Joseph Makonyane, Khotatso Prinsloo Bless, Madiboho Samuel Mokhethi, PH Motlejoa and Constable Luzuko Cenga remain in custody until 1 October 2020 where they will apply for bail.

This follows their arrest by the Provincial Anti-Corruption unit on Tuesday the 22 September 2020 for their alleged involvement in the business robbery committed on the 20 June 2020, at a supermarket in Kroonstad.

The suspects allegedly conducted an operation at a shop in Station Street, Kroonstad, where they arrested the owner and his wife for contravention of Disaster Management Act, for selling cigarettes during lockdown period. A large amount of money and cigarettes were confiscated. The couple was later released and money and cigarettes handed back to them. It is when it emerged that the amount handed back to them is not the same as that taken.

The other two members, Sgt Molifi and Maloisane will appear again at Welkom Magistrate court on Monday the 28 September 2020, on a separate charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. This after a firearm and ammunitions were found in their houses during the search.
