A 45-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Bloemfontein Regional Court for multiple counts of rape against a minor. The identity of the accused is being withheld to protect the victim, who was only eight years old when the abuse began in 2015.
The accused, who was the boyfriend of the victim’s mentally challenged aunt and a provider for the household, repeatedly raped the child over several years in Bloemspruit. Throughout the ordeal, he allegedly threatened to kill her if she disclosed the abuse to anyone.
The victim, now 16, endured the horrific assaults until October 2023, when the accused raped her once more—this time while armed with a knife—and again threatened her life. This final act of violence prompted the teenager to confide in a neighbor, who immediately alerted the authorities.
A case was opened and investigated by Constable Nthabiseng Tsenoli of the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit. Upon discovering that he was wanted by police, the accused fled, but a diligent investigation led by Constable Tsenoli resulted in his arrest on 27 November 2023. He was found hiding on a plot.
Working alongside Advocate York from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Constable Tsenoli ensured a strong prosecution, ultimately securing a life sentence for the accused. The court ruled that he would not be allowed back into the community, delivering justice for the survivor after years of suffering.
