An elderly farmer’s wife attacked on Saturday, October 29, 2016 in Ladybrand, in the Free State.

Hazel Meyer, a 65-year-old woman is in hospital and being treated for serious head injuries sustained during the attack.

A 24-year-old male entered the home, attacked the owner with a bottle holder, and struck her on the head several times.

The suspect apparently worked on the farm, gained entry through the open back door, and attacked the resident. Her husband was not home at the time. The suspect fled the scene with a television set and other valuable household items.

A prompt reaction from the South African police and farming community led to the apprehension of the suspect who will appear in court on accusations of theft. The police confirmed that the suspect is associated to the robbery and attack as several items belonging to the Meyer family was found in his possession.
