A 59-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged shooting incident in Doorn, Welkom, on Tuesday, 24 June 2025.
According to police reports, members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit were conducting crime-combating operations in the area when they heard multiple gunshots. Officers swiftly secured the vicinity to locate the source of the gunfire and encountered the suspect holding a firearm.
The suspect was tactically approached and disarmed. No injuries were reported during the incident. The man allegedly told police that he fired the shots to scare someone who had insulted him.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect’s firearm license had expired. Police confiscated one special handgun, special cartridges, and live ammunition.
The suspect faces charges of discharging a firearm in a municipal area, failure to renew a firearm license, and illegal possession of ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.
