A 59-year-old man is in police custody and facing a murder charge following a fatal shooting that occurred in Vredefort in the early hours of Friday morning.

The Vredefort police were dispatched to a residence on Turten Street at approximately 05:15 on Friday, 07 November 2025, after receiving a complaint about a shooting. Upon arrival, officers were met by the 59-year-old male suspect, who directed them to the scene.

There, they discovered the body of a 53-year-old man lying on the ground with fatal gunshot wounds.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the suspect, who is employed by a private security company, had apprehended the deceased for allegedly stealing copper. A physical altercation is said to have ensued between the two men.

According to the suspect’s account, the deceased attempted to disarm him during the struggle, which led to the shooting.

Further investigation revealed that the deceased was also employed in the security sector, working for a different security company.

The 59-year-old suspect is expected to make his initial appearance before the Vredefort Magistrate’s Court soon to face a formal charge of murder. The police investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident remains ongoing.
