FREE STATE – A 42-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged murder of his 44-year-old girlfriend, Nontombi Poswa, in Welkom, Free State. The arrest follows the discovery of the victim’s body in Reitzpark after a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal physical altercation.
On Monday, 17 August 2026, police were summoned to a complaint in the Reitzpark area. Upon arrival, officers were directed to an outside room where they discovered a woman lying motionless on the floor. The victim exhibited multiple visible injuries on her body and forehead and was subsequently declared deceased at the scene. She was formally identified by her next-of-kin as 44-year-old Nontombi Poswa.
According to a South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, preliminary investigations indicate that the couple engaged in an argument during the day, which later escalated into a physical fight. Authorities allege that the victim was struck multiple times with a blunt object before sustaining fatal wounds.
Following the investigation, the 42-year-old suspect was arrested and formally charged with murder. During the process, law enforcement officials confiscated a pick handle presumed to have been used during the commission of the crime, which has been officially booked in as evidence.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 19 August 2026.
