4 People shot at a tavern, accused sentenced, Odendaalsrus

A 33-year-old man was sentenced to 23 years’ direct imprisonment by Odendaalsrus Regional Court.

The Acting District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa District, Brigadier Mzondi Mojafi applauded Welkom POP Unit members, who were the arresting officers and investigator Sergeant Andries Leshoro for their sterling investigation which led to this conviction.

On Monday, 12 April 2021, at about 02:15, a shooting incident occurred at a tavern in the K9 section of Kutloanong, where four people were shot.

The suspect fled on foot from the crime scene.

Three of the victims were taken to the hospital for medical treatment, while the fourth victim succumbed to his gunshot wound.

The incident was reported to Odendaalsrus SAPS and a case of murder and attempted murder was registered for further investigation.

The accused, Phoka Zacharia Mohloki was sentenced recently as follows:

Count 1: Murder 15 years’ imprisonment;
Count 2: Attempted murder 8 years’ direct imprisonment;
Count 3: Attempted murder 5 years’ direct imprisonment;
Count 2 and 3 will run concurrently.
