4 Municipality workers arrested for possession of mine property, Welkom
4 Municipality workers arrested for possession of mine property, Welkom

Members of Knock Out Task Team received a tip-off about theft of copper cable at a mine. The information was operationalised and a way-lay was conducted.

On 9 June 2022 at about 08:15, the members conducted a way-lay at the dumping site at Welkom. Two vehicles were stopped, the occupants jumped from the vehicles and fled on foot. Members gave chase and three suspects aged 28, 33 and a 48-year-old taxi driver were arrested between the slime dams of President Steyn mine number 4 shaft.

One of the arrested suspects was wanted for several cases that involved destruction of infrastructure within Matjhabeng. Members of Crime Intelligence, Mine Security and Knock Out Team searched the two vehicles and a large quantity of copper cable belonging to the mine was found inside the two vehicles.

The two vehicles and the copper cable were seized. The three suspects are facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and they will appear soon in the Welkom Magistrate Court.

In a separate incident, members were busy at a scene when a truck was stopped and mine properties were found inside it. Four employees were arrested and will face possession of suspected stolen property, they will appear soon in the Welkom Magistrate Court.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, Lt Gen BB Motswenyane applauded these joint operations which led to the arrests of suspects destroying the infrastructure including Municipality workers.
