On 19 May 2022, at about 14:25, mine security members were busy patrolling in Saaiplaas Shaft number three when a foul smell caught their attention. Their supervisor was summoned to the scene and upon closer inspection, they have noticed a leg of a human being, covered with rocks.
Police were summoned to the scene.
On arrival, the rocks were removed with the assistance of Matjhabeng Fire Brigade. Three bodies were discovered and a third decapitated body.
Preliminary investigation revealed that an empty cartridge was found next to this hole in the mine premises. All of the bodies were in a state of decomposition.
A case of triple murder has been registered for further investigation.
