EXCELSIOR – The Excelsior police have arrested 11 protesters at Mahlatswetsa near Excelsior following public violence in which a road was barricaded with stones and burning tyres.

It’s alleged that on Wednesday, 16 August 2023 at 06:50 Excelsior police were informed about 50 people blocking road with stones and burning tyres at Mahlatswetsa Township, Excelsior. The local police handled the situation whilst Public Order Police Unit were mobilized for crowd management in this regard from Selosesha and Ficksburg. Indeed the streets were blocked with stokes and rubbish spilled all over the streets. No property got damaged or people injured during the protest. The motive behind the protest is not known at this stage.

The 11 suspects are expected to appear before the Excelsior Magistrate court today, 17 August 2023 facing charge of public violence.
