Durban – Four friends were shot in a drive-by shooting outside a Durban nightclub on Sunday. Patrons at another club claimed they too had come under fire about six hours earlier.
The four friends were leaving a club in Matthews Meyiwa (Stamford Hill) Road when a gunman in a white VW Golf opened fire on them.
Two women who were shot, managed to get back to the club for help while the driver took their teenage friend to hospital. The driver did not realise that he too had been shot.
A police source said the same Golf was spotted outside a Bluff Road nightclub. A group of patrons claimed the driver of the Golf had fired shots at them earlier in the evening.
No one was injured in that incident.
Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said the motive was unknown. Police received a report of the Bluff Road incident at 11.15pm on Saturday. Six hours later, the four friends were shot in Matthews Meyiwa Road.
They were celebrating a friend’s birthday.
Kim Boucher, 23, recovering at her grandmother’s home in Sydenham, said she and her friend, Megan Dickson, 33, had travelled from Pietermaritzburg to attend their friend’s birthday at the club.
They arrived at the club at 1am on Sunday and left at 5am with a friend, Brendon Bouverie, 27, of Sydenham, who offered them a lift home.
Travis Vetter, 19, also got a ride home with Bouverie.
As they approached the bakkie, they heard what sounded like fireworks going off.
“There was a ringing noise in my ear. I heard people scream that they had been shot. My leg felt warm,” said Boucher. She had been shot.
Dickson said she felt a sharp pain in her left thigh. Wounded, the women ran back to the club, only to find the door shut.
They banged on the door screaming they had been shot.
The bouncers allowed them in and called for an ambulance…
