The former first vice president of the Republic of South Sudan, Riek Machar, is in South Africa on a private visit for medical reasons, the department of international relations and cooperation (Dirco) said on Thursday.
“Consultations were held with the government of South Sudan regarding the visit of Dr Riek Machar to South Africa. Dr Riek Machar arrived on Wednesday, 12 October 2016 and his period of stay in the country is not known,” Dirco said in a statement.
“South Africa reiterates her commitment to continue to work with the government and the people of South Sudan to achieve peace, stability and development.”
The department said South Africa does this through participation in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Plus mechanism and the inter-party political dialogue facilitated by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chama Cha Mapinduzi of Tanzania, the department said.
