More than 400 000 firearm owners who did not apply for the renewal of their firearm licenses in time, are now illegal firearm owners and will have to hand their weapons in to the police.

It follows after the Constitutional Court maintained an appeal from the Minister of Security and Security and put aside a Supreme Court order which constituted the invalidity of two sections of the Firearms Act.

Previous legislation has stipulated that a firearm license are valid for a lifetime, but the Act of 2000 has changed that and licenses are valid for 2, 5 or 10 years and must then be renewed.

Firearm owners have already expressed that they will not hand in their weapons to the police due to the often administrative inability of the police. There is also no confidence that weapons handed to the police will not end up in criminals hands.
