The Minister of Finance’s evasion of urgent written questions from the FF Plus about the delays experienced by many farmers and businesses in the refund of VAT, raise serious questions about the threat posed by state capture of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Said Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus parliamentary spokesman for finance.

Adv. Alberts said no question from the FF Plus was answered, and it was dodged by saying the tax Ombudsman is currently investigating the matter.

“This response and the failure to provide answers to the FF Plus’s questions indicate a very worrying situation currently in SARS. It’s significant and leaves a red light flashing.”

“The economy is currently stumbling because of the state capture by the Guptas, and it is the many small businesses nationwide who keep the economy running as a large-scale job creator. Now it appears that SARS also has a huge share in the destruction of small businesses due to withholding of VAT due to them.”

“The FF Plus will ask the Ombudsman to investigate how many businesses are affected by this, how many employees have been retrenched and how many businesses eventually have to close their doors because of the situation,” said Adv Alberts.
