Farming couple saved by broken iron from brutal torture

Three suspects are on the run after holding two victims at gunpoint and trying to torture them with a hot iron at the Doornhoek Farm in Pilgrim’s Rest, Mpumalanga.

This was the second farm attack to occur in Mpumalanga over the weekend.

According to police spokesperson Constable Khethumuzi Nkosi, in the second incident three suspects wearing gloves and balaclavas entered a house on the farm at around 22:00 on Saturday and harassed the occupants.

“Two victims were tied up with a rope and chains after three armed men entered their house. They demanded cash and firearms from the victims.

“The suspects wanted to use an iron to burn the victims, identified as Cornelius Pierneef, 31, and his fiance, Saran Christie, 21, but the couple’s iron was broken,” said Nkosi.

He said the suspects fled the scene with a 12-gauge shotgun, a double-barrel shotgun, a .243 hunting rifle with a telescope and an 11mm Mauser antique rifle, along with jewellery and two Samsung cellphones.

“The getaway car that was used was a gold VW Golf TDI 2004 Limited Edition which was also stolen from the farm and later found abandoned in Hazyview on Sunday,” he said.

A case of house robbery has been opened.

On Friday evening, an elderly couple were brutally assaulted with a hot iron on their farm in Badfontein, before being robbed of their cellphones, three firearms and R20 000 cash.
