Farmer shot and stabbed in Nelspruit farm attack

Pieter Slabbert (51) is in a stable condition in Nelspruit Medi Clinic, Eastern Transvaal’s intensive care unit where he is being treated for multiple gunshot and stab wounds.

He and his family were attacked on a smallholding near Malelane on Friday February 13, 2015 at about 16:45. According to his wife, Lizette Slabbert, she, Pieter and their 22-year-old daughter were in the kitchen with the back door open, when two men entered the house.

One attacker apparently had a 9 mm pistol and the other one was armed with knives. The men did not wear balaclavas.

By the time that the attackers entered the kitchen, they immediately started shooting at them. Their daughter fled to a room. However, the attackers grabbed her in the face and pressed the gun against her head. The attackers apparently called her “white trash” and threatened to kill them. They stole all the cell phones and a laptop that was on the kitchen table.

According to Lizette one attacker fired four times at Pieter but only two bullets wounded him. Then they stabbed him with a knife. She pleaded for their daughter’s life when they grabbed her by the hair and threatened to kill her too. The attackers left them and fled. Lizette immediately called for help with her hidden cellphone.

Nelspruit Medi-Clinic spokeswoman Lisa Pillay confirmed that Pieter was in a stable condition. Eastern Transvaal police spokesperson Sergeant Gerald Sedibe said a case of robbery and attempted murder was opened. The police found the possible stolen items at a nearby sugar plantation. It has not been confirmed whether it came from the Slabberts’s house.

Sedibe said no suspects had been arrested and anyone with information should contact the investigating officer, Lt. Pat Banda at 082-449-0291 contact
