Family attacked on farm, one suspect shot and killed

Marius Clark, a farmer from Donnybrooke in KwaZulu-Natal, was attacked on Saturday by three armed suspects.Clark and his children fought back, and during the incident, Clark shot and killed one of the suspects.

It was on Saturday morning that the suspects cut the razor wire to gain access to the property.

Clark’s wife, Lizelle was already on her way to work in Donnybrook when the suspects gained access. Clark’s father, Kobie Clark, lives in a cottage near the farm house.

Clark was busy with farm work and returned to the house to fetch his keys and cellphone, as he was going to go to Pietermaritzburg to attend to business. The suspects were already in the house, and already assaulting the residents when Clark entered. The children fought back against the attackers.

The attackers overpowered Clark, and the grandfather entered the house to check up on why there was so much noise. The suspects tied up the elderly man’s feet and hands behind his back with plastic cable ties. Clark’s hands were tied up in front of his body with cable ties and seen as a blessing. One of the suspects pointed a gun at Clark’s back and forced him to walk with the other two suspects one on each side.

When the suspects walked toward the back door with Clark, he told them that they will not all fit through the door. Surprisingly Clark managed to loosen the cable ties, and as soon as the suspects stepped outside, he managed to push the door with his shoe and called to his son to bring the rifle. Because his hands were tied, Clark shot from the hip and one of the suspects was fatally wounded.

The other two suspects fled with cellphones and the matriculants laptop.

The children were not harmed during the incident, and Clark sustained minor injuries.

The dead suspect was identified by a farm worker from a neighboring farm that had been attacked three days earlier.

The police are continuing with the investigation.
