Execution of hijacking victims foiled by tracking device

A hijacker was shot and killed during a shoot-out with police just before he and his accomplice were about to execute their victims in a field in Tshepisong, Soweto on Wednesday, police said.

Two men were driving a white Toyota Avanza with goods they had bought at White City when they were hijacked and driven to Tshepisong, police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng told News24.

He said police found the men after receiving a distress signal from the car’s tracking device.

“On arrival at the scene, police heard some shots being fired and they went to investigate… The two suspects fled, firing shots at the police. Police shot back and one was fatally wounded and the other escaped,” Mofokeng said.

One of the hijacking victims, who was assaulted during the attack, was taken to hospital.

Police found two unlicensed firearms on the scene.

A case of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms was being investigated.
