Ex-cop dies after mugging

A well-known former member of the Pietermaritzburg police communications team died in hospital yesterday following medical complications after he was mugged. Warrant officer Vicus Leslie “Savage” Botha (63) was hospitalised at Mediclinic on Saturday after he was allegedly mugged at the gate of his West Street home.

His son, Craig Botha, told The Witness yesterday that his father had suffered medical complications and was in a coma. “He passed away peacefully this morning. He was a good father who provided for his family and was always there for us. He took a keen interest in family activities,” said Craig.
Former police spokesperson in Pietermaritzburg, Colonel Henry Budhram, said Botha served with him in the SAPS from 1982 when he joined the police after arriving from Zimbabwe and was remembered for having good people skills.
