The national energy regulator, Nersa’s public sessions on Eskom’s proposed tariff increase, are currently underway.

Eskom is asking for an excessive increase of thirty percent to recover a R66 billion deficit and despite the shortages, Eskom continues to give excessive bonuses to its senior staff.

Numerous groups have already indicated that they will oppose that request.

And just like last year and years before that when the increases were discussed, Eskom suddenly announces that load shedding of power is a possibility. Observers see this as blatant extortion so that Eskom can get their way and boost tariffs.
