ENatis offline: vehicle owners can be criminalized and fined

Vehicle owners may now have to bear the consequences of eNatis’ inability to pay their Telkom account of R8 million as owners can be fined in terms of the National Road Traffic Act if their vehicle licenses are not renewed on time, said Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus parliamentary spokesman on transport.

According to Adv. Alberts, an employee of eNatis, acknowledged to the FF Plus that their systems are “out of order” due to the outstanding bill and that eNatis is currently negotiating with Telkom to find a solution.

He said the FF Plus wrote a letter to the Minister of Transport, Mr. Joe Maswanganyi, in which he was asked to give urgent attention to the problem and to determine how it originated.

“It is scary that thousands of vehicle owners are criminalized and fined because of the incompetence of the eNatis system’s management. If there was negligence, the culprits should be held responsible.”

There was a dispute between Telkom and eNatis about the bill, but then eNatis had to make arrangements in time to keep the lines open, pending a solution to the dispute.

“Vehicle owners are now extradited to a dysfunctional state just as many people experience it on a daily basis. The FF Plus urges the minister to intervene in the interests of motorists urgently,” said Adv Alberts.
