Two men were arrested minutes after they broke into a Johannesburg home and stabbed an elderly man with a screwdriver.
WO. Xoli Mbele, police spokesperson, said four men broke in at a house in Moffat View on Friday, October 9, 2015, at about 12:00. “The suspects jumped over the fence and attacked an 84-year-old man in the kitchen. They stabbed him with a screwdriver and he was severely assaulted before they tied his hands and feet with cable ties,” said Mbele.
The robbers ransacked the house, apparently looking for money. They fled with a container full of jewelry and other items.
Police officers on a routine crime prevention patrol saw the four men running away from the scene and called in reinforcements. “Two suspects, 27 and 40 years old, were caught and arrested. Two unlicensed firearms, a screwdriver and jewelry box were found in their possession,” said Mbele.
The other two suspects managed to escape and are still at large. “The elderly man was rushed to a hospital,” he said.
The two suspects will soon appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of burglary and illegal possession of firearms.
