Elderly man killed on 85th birthday at retirement home

A resident’s body was found in his cottage at a retirement home in Somerstrand, Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, on his 85th birthday.

W0. Alwin Labans, police spokesperson, told Maroela Media the man’s body was found after his housekeeper arrived about 08:00 at the Duncan Ferguson retirement village.

“She pressed the bell at the retirement village’s gate, but there was no answer. She then asked the gardener to open the gate.”

The victim’s cottage was also locked and the housekeeper called the caretaker. After they called the elderly man and he did not answer, they unlocked the house and entered.

“They found his body on his bed, with his hands tied,” said Labans.

“There was blood on his nose, but no other visible wounds or injuries were detected. The whole house was turned upside down and it looked as if the killers were looking for goods to steal.”

According to Labans a window was open in the house and the suspects allegedly gained access to the cottage through the open window.

“Ironically, it is his birthday today. He lived to the age of 85,” he said.

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of his death. The victim’s name cannot be published.

Labans said the victim’s son was at the murder scene, but the rest of his family must still be informed of his death.

A case of murder and house robbery is being investigated.

Nobody has been arrested in connection with the incident yet.
