Elderly man killed and wife critical after brutal farm attack

Farm Attacks isolated areas are the target

An elderly man was killed and his wife seriously injured after being attacked and severely assaulted on their farm near Dirkiesdorp in Mpumalanga.

Sgt. Gerald Sedibe, police spokesman, told Maroela Media Johannes van Zyl’s (84) body was found at about 16:30 in the bathroom of the house. He had serious head injuries after being beaten presumably with crutches.

His wife, Charlotte van Zyl (55), survived the attack but was seriously injured. She was rushed to a nearby hospital.

“An employee of the couple, a Swazi citizen, was arrested in connection with the attack,” said Sedibe. “The motive for the murder is not yet known and will form part of the police investigation.”
