Stephen Salmon (Fanie) Wehmeyer a resident of Kempton Park in Gauteng was apparently brutally murdered with a hammer during a burglary on Tuesday. It was barely four months after his 90th birthday.

Fanie’s son, Lex, came at about 15:00 and found his father’s bloodied body in the toilet cubicle of his house.

Lex’s son, Lmile, told Marula Media on Wednesday his father lived with his grandfather to care for him.

“My father went home in the afternoon and saw that the house was in disarray,” Lmile said. “He became suspicious and immediately started looking for my grandfather. The back door was open. My father went on and saw my grandfather’s feet sticking out from the toilet’s door.”

Wehmeyer was found in a fetal position in a pool of blood. He was tied to the toilet base. A hammer was lying next to his body.

According to Lmile his father’s laptop, a credit card and other small items were missing. The attackers also tried to break open a safe, but was unsuccessful.

Capt. Jethro Mtshali, a police spokesman, told Marula Media the police were investigating a case of murder and robbery.

“We do not know how many attackers were involved in the incident, and no one has been arrested,” he said. “He possibly died of head injuries but an autopsy will be conducted to determine if the hammer is the murder weapon.”

Two months ago Fanie was attacked by two men while he was working in the garden.

The suspects assaulted him severely and strangled him. They wanted to gain access to the house, but were unsuccessful. They left without taking anything.

Police are investigating the possibility that the two incidents are connected.

Mtshali requested anyone with information to call the investigating officer, Warrant Officer. Robert Motsai, at 072 444 1642
