Elderly farmer murdered for a knife and keys

Just a knife and a bunch of keys were stolen from an elderly man who died two weeks after a brutal hammer attack last year in the Free State.

Tankiso Ernest Beleme (23) and Lawrence Thuli Thabatha (34) appeared in the High Court on Tuesday June 9, 2015 for the murder of the 80-year-old Gert Stephanus (Buks) Swanepoel.

The charge stems from an incident July 2014 when Beleme and Thabatha went to Swanepoel’s farm, Sterkfontein, in the area of Vierfontein, outside Klerksdorp.

Beleme and Thabatha are also charged with aggravated robbery, attempted murder (on Swanepoel’s wife, Baby) and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to the charge sheet Beleme and Thabatha went to Swanepoel’s farm under the guise of looking for work. A firearm was aimed at Swanepoel, and then Beleme allegedly hit Swanepoel more than once with a hammer against the head.
