On 7 September 2020, EFF members started to to shut down a number of Clicks branches across South Africa. This is a backlash over an apparent “insensitive and offensive” advert published by the National chain store group on its website. The “protest” which includes destruction of property, is said to continue until Friday 11 September 2020. A number of Clicks stores have been closed by the EFF and Julius Malema, their leader, called for his members to attack the stores in a tweet and has himself chained closed one of the stores. A number of stores have been vandalized and also petrol bombed.

The advert described the hair of two black woman as “dry and damaged” and “frizzy and dull”, while the images of two white woman’s hair was described as “fine flat hair” and “normal hair”

The “protest” which is causing damage and direct violence in malls and shopping centers is being monitored by police but no action is being taken, unlike the peaceful demonstration in Cape Town by members of the tourism industry, who were met with considerable force by the police.
