Protests erupted on the night of 13 February 2019, between 20:00 and 22:30 on the R335, Addo Road, next to Ikamvelihle and Motherwell. About 200 residents of Namakanje in Ikamvelihle blocked the road and burned tyres and rubble. Their motive was housing and sanitation issues.

SAPS Public Order Police had to disperse the protesters after a truck was burnt inside the Municipal Depot on the R335.

By 22:30 the area calmed down. The situation flared up again the next morning at about 06:30 after the R334 and R335 crossing was blocked again by protestors using burning tyres. Two trucks were thrown with petrol bombs but only one had partial burn damages when the petrol bomb caught fire inside the truck.

More road blockages sporadically are created along the R335 Road by these protestors. SAPS are deployed along the route to restore the situation.

For safety reasons motorists using these roads are urged to make use of alternative routes until the situation calms down again.
