Keiskammahoek police were notified about the service delivery protest in Keiskammahoek CBD today. An estimate of over 2000 community members blockaded the public road with burning tryes, stones and damaging police and Ipid vehicles

Public Order Police members were summoned to manage the situation. They dispersed the angry crowd with rubber bullets. Twenty suspects were arrested for public violence. We were later informed that a 62 year old man has passed away.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known. Ipid are investigating a case of murder. The autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The suspects are due to appear in the Keiskammahoek Magistrates Court facing charges of public violence.

The SAPS would like to appeal to the community leaders to be calm and respect the process of the law to take its course whilst their petition is being dealt with by the local authorities.

We further urge the members of the public to refrain from committing any acts of violence, as much as it is still their constitutional right to embark on a peaceful strike but that has to be done within the ambit of the law. Thus eliminating the criminal element and respecting other people’s rights as well. It is unlawful to damage government property.
