Two women are set to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court today in connection with the shocking abduction of two newborn babies from the maternity ward of Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha.

The infants, aged just two and four days old, were allegedly stolen from incubators on Tuesday night. According to Eastern Cape Health MEC, Ntandokazi Capa, one of the suspects had registered herself at the hospital under a false identity, pretending to be pregnant with twins despite multiple medical confirmations that she was not expecting.

How the Abduction Unfolded

During a press briefing, MEC Capa revealed that the suspect had visited several clinics—including an international facility—where she was repeatedly told she was not pregnant. Undeterred, she allegedly registered under an alias at Dora Nginza Hospital, gaining access to the maternity ward.

Reports indicate that the woman entered the nursery where mothers were breastfeeding and instructed them to leave, claiming they had fed their babies enough. Once alone, she reportedly placed the two premature infants—still in fragile condition—into a bag and exited through a separate entrance.

Swift Arrests and Security Concerns

The suspects were apprehended outside the hospital shortly after the abduction. However, the incident has raised serious questions about security protocols at the facility.

MEC Capa acknowledged potential leadership and security failures, stating that plans are underway to introduce biometric systems and strengthen hospital security. She also mentioned that a new hospital board would soon be appointed to oversee improvements.

Ongoing Police Investigation

While the MEC refrained from divulging further details, citing an active police investigation, she assured the public that more information would emerge during today’s court proceedings. The suspects face charges of child abduction.

Authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward as the case unfolds.
