SAPS members attached to the Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combatting unit arrested two suspects and recovered two firearms after they immediately acted on information received on Sunday 23 March 2025.
It is alleged that on abovementioned date at approximately 17:15, the members obtained information of a white Hyundai Venue motor vehicle that was involved in a shooting incident in Motherwell on Saturday 22 March 2025 that was driving around in Summerstrand. The members operationalised the information, the vehicle was noticed driving in Strandfontein Road towards Admirality Way, Summerstrand. The vehicle stopped and as the members approached the vehicle, they noticed that the passenger at the back was armed with a firearm. The driver of the vehicle sped off and a high speed chase ensued through Summerstrand, the members successfully forced the vehicle to stop in Military Road, Central, where they apprehended two suspects, aged 33 and 34. The suspect, who was the driver of the vehicle, manage to evade arrest.
The members confiscated two unlicensed firearms, one box of 27 x 9mm rounds of ammunition, a R1 rifle magazine with eight of live rounds of ammunition and false vehicle number plates in the vehicle.
The suspects were arrested on the following charges: illegal possession of prohibited firearms, unlawful possession of ammunition, pointing of firearm and reckless or negligent driving.
During the investigation, the detective will probe the possibility of linking the suspects with other cases. They will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court during the week.
