Two police officials were each released on R500 bail each, after facing charges of theft and possession of suspected stolen property at the Graaff Reinet magistrate’s court yesterday. Their case was postponed to Friday, 23 February 2024

The arrest of the officers followed a week-long investigation by a team of detectives from the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit. On Thursday, 18 January 2024 at about 06:00, the team in possession of search warrants searched private residences of two police officials. WO Johannes Gerber and WO Lawrence Plaatjies performed duties at the Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit in Graaff Reinet. Police recovered state property estimated to be valued over one million rands (R1 000 000).
