Two men aged 26 and 30 were arrested by Provincial Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Mthatha Public Order Policing (POP) Unit members for possession of prohibited firearms in Nomadolo and Goso location in Ngqeleni respectively in the early hours of 6 June 2019.
The operation was conducted after members received information that led to positive results when the first suspect was found in possession of an AK47 Assault Rifle with no rounds and a .45 Wilson pistol with 1 round of ammunition. The second suspect was found in possession of an AK47 Assault Rifle with 4 rounds of ammunition and a Star 9mm Pistol with 4 rounds of ammunition as well as R26 000 cash.
The suspects will be profiled to establish if they can be linked to robberies that occurred around Mthatha and all the firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing. They will appear before Ngqeleni Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and possession of prohibited firearms in respect of the AK47 rifles.
“To all the hard core criminals, the net is closing on you. More arrests are imminent, we cannot tolerate any robberies especially in Mthatha” said the Acting Cluster Commander, Brigadier Mandlakhe Twala sending a stern warning.
