Two more Libode armed robbers in court

Two more alleged robbers made their first appearance in the Libode Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in connection with the July 28 armed robbery at Built It hardware shop in Libode, the Eastern Cape Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said on Sunday.

Bandile Sinda, 25, and Yandisa Mxawuka, 23, were the fourth and fifth suspects arrested by the Hawks organised crime unit in connection with the theft of about R350,000, Captain Anelisa Feni said.

The other three were John Mthembu, 31, Khayalethu Ngqolowa, 31, and Alex Khumalo, 32, who all made their first appearance in the same court on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the Hawks found commercial explosives in the house of one of the suspects.

Mthembu, Ngqolowa, and Khumalo were arrested by the organised crime unit on Monday in Mthatha. Sinda and Mxawuka were positively connected to the robbery subsequent to their arrest in Libode on August 31 by members of the Libode police station for possession of unlicensed firearms.

“These suspects allegedly first held at gunpoint the security guard, then broke into the store through the roof, [and] stole approximately R350,000 and two plasma televisions.”

Mthembu, Ngqolowa, Khumalo, Sinda, and Mxawuka would next appear in court on September 14 for a formal bail application, Feni said.
